The National Student Survey

Fill it in - we want to know what you have to say!

What is it?
The National Student Survey (NSS) is launching this year in February. Conducted by Ipsos MORI, it’s the largest student survey in the world and you, as a final year undergraduate student at Newcastle University, will be involved. The survey is designed to provide information on how universities across the country are performing in supporting the student learning experience.

How the results affect you and the university…
The results are designed to evaluate the teaching and learning experience at U.K. universities. Increasingly these results are being used in university league tables and form the basis of where a university ranks against other institutions from around the country. The results are also shown on the Unistats website (www.unistats.com) with links from the UCAS website so students can look at the detailed results of the survey when they fill in their forms. By looking at the results like this, prospective students can make well-informed decisions on what they want to study, and where they want to study it. The survey also gives you the opportunity to provide the university with some feedback about your experience of the whole of your time at Newcastle. The results and comments are used to improve the learning and teaching experience of all students by highlighting issues which need to be addressed as well as areas where things are going well.

However because the survey is short it isn’t specific about any specific issues you may or may not have. So if you have any issues you would like help with or to talk to someone about then feel free to contact me at education.union@ncl.ac.uk or call 0191 239 3963. Alternatively you can contact members of your staff student committees or the Student Advice Centre at the Union. We are here to improve the student experience at Newcastle and feedback from students is essential.

How do I get involved?
You will receive an e-mail during the week commencing 4th of February 2008.  It’s recommended that you fill in the survey as soon as possible as Ipsos MORI does contact students, by post or telephone, who don’t fill in the survey on-line. Alternatively you can fill it in at www.thestudentsurvey.com where there is also more info. about the survey. We hope you’ll fill in the survey, it only takes 5 minutes on-line and will help future students to make the right choices as well as helping your university and Union improve the quality of the student experience at Newcastle.
