Student Support
Pete Mercer
Hello! My name’s Pete Mercer and I’m your Student Support Officer for the year. Basically, this means I’m in charge of student welfare; this can be anything from housing issues to sexual health, financial difficulty to mental wellbeing. Most people have an awesome time at uni but everyone is likely to come across something that doesn’t go quite right, which is where I come in. I’m here to help with any kind of problems you may encounter during your time in Newcastle, and if I can’t help, I’ll be sure to point you in the direction of someone who can.
I was elected by fellow students to represent you and your welfare, as well as being the student representative for diversity, equality and community relations. So if you have a certain issue or feel that something needs to be changed, please come and let me know so that you can have your say. I sit on both Union and University committees , and chair the Housing Committee, Diversity Committee and Freshers’ Week Working Group in particular, as well as sitting on local police, council and resident meetings, which is where I can voice these opinions. And in the mean-time I’ll be working hard on Union, university and local council strategy to make sure your wellbeing is at the forefront of consideration. I also chair the weekly Welfare and Campaigns (WAC) Committee and run all the campaigns through-out the year with the Campaigns Officer. Together, we also organise the WAC Crew in order to make the campaigns as high profile as possible.
My confidential drop-in session is on a Wednesday 12-2 every week in my office on the services corridor on the first floor of the union where I’ll be should you have any burning issues (no matter how big or small) or the need to confide in someone. But feel free to pop in anytime, whether it’s to talk about a personal problem, to pick up free condoms or safety alarms, or even just for a friendly chat! I’m all ears…
