Hi there! My name is Mike and I am the Racial Equality Officer for the Union Society in 2007-2008. My job is primarily to ensure Racial Equality and promote Ethnic Diversity with the Union and the University.
Racism and discrimination is still an active issue for many students and it is not to be tolerated. Everyone has a right to live their life without fear of suffering abuse because of who they are. I work along side a great team of other liberation officers who ensure that you are not discriminated against on the grounds of gender, race, sexuality, disability or religious beliefs.
Although racism does not happen very often in the university it is important to maintain a strong system in which to tackle racism should it arise. It is my job to maintain and better this system in order to make sure that should anyone suffer on the grounds of racism action can be take. It is also my job to run anti-racism campaigns to ensure that people are aware that this is a place of Racial diversity and that racism will not be tolerated.
There are many places you can go to find out information and support about your rights and freedoms under the Equal Opportunities Act, The Race Relations Act (Amendment) and it is also now illegal to incite hatred on the grounds of hate.
One place where you can get support is the Student Advice Centre which is also a hate crime reporting station, here you can get information any advice about what you can do should you feel you are being discriminated against. You can even report the crime to the police and help tackle areas of racial hatred in your area.
