Hello! My name is Becky, and I'm the Executive Officer for Democracy and Involvement in the Union Society this year. What, I hear you say, does that mean? Well, basically it means that I deal specifically with Union Elections and encouraging you lot to vote in them, and increasing awareness of the Union's Democratic processes, such as Union Council and its sub-committees.
Of the 18,000 odd students at this University all of 2,000 voted in the last Elections. Most of you guys don't vote because you don't think it'll affect you, don't know any of the candidates, or simply don't know there's an Election happening! I try to publicise Elections and to get you interested in why you should vote (and hopefully manage to get a few more of you voting too). This year for the first time you can vote in the November and March Elections online from anywhere in the world by going to http://vote.ncl.ac.uk. That's the Democracy bit!
The Involvement part involves increasing awareness and knowledge about Union Council, (the most powerful governing body of the Union) and sub-committees such as Welfare and Campaigns Committee, Disciplinary Committee, Diversity Committee and Ethics and Environment Committee. It might all sound a bit weird and incomprehensible but my job is to make these Democratic bodies more accessible to students and hopefully to get more of you involved in them.
If you're interested in getting involved in any of the above or want to know more about Elections, Democracy or the Union Society in general, please email me at exec.union@ncl.ac.uk.
