Working Rights

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) publishes a series of free booklets explaining your rights at work and dealing with other common workplace problems. If you would like to know more information about working rights for young people then please click here.

The above website is about your rights at work and sets out the basic legal minimum standards that go with every job, whether it's during the term or in the holidays, part-time or full-time. You should not rely on this as a detailed guide to the law, and should always seek detailed advice before taking any action.

You may also find the website that the TUC has developed useful, which explains your rights at work for part-time workers. This website explains your rights to:

  - Be treated the same as a full-time worker in a similar job
  - Have the same terms and conditions as a full-time worker doing the same job as you

and there is a short roung-up of how other rights at work apply to part-timers.

Agency workers have rights too!

Even though you move from job to job it doesn't mean you have to miss out on basic rights at work. There are rules covering both your employment agency and the employers they send you to. The best agencies will guarantee your rights and often offer additional benefits and protections. But unfortunately, this is not always the case. It is in your interest to know your entitlements. You can download a pdf from their website which sets out your rights and tells where to get help.
