Ten Steps to Student 2 Student Success

Do…

1. Seek permission from the Marketing department before embarking on any advertising campaigns.

2. Be creative! No one pays attention to boring posters or flyers, you have to win people over. Think about why they should give you their time or money.

3. Ask for advice on poster or flyer designs. We will be happy to help you out with ideas or answers on more technical matters if you are struggling

4. Be enthusiastic! Talk to people when you are flyering, why should they get excited about your society or event if you aren’t yourself!?

5. Plan ahead. There is no point in just putting posters up on the day you are doing something and expecting thousands of students to turn up. The more notice you give us in the Marketing department, the more we will be able to help you!

6. Be pro-active! Planning a social? Think about where you want to go in advance and try and get a venue or two on your side. Come and talk to us in the marketing department to discuss ideas and suggestions.

7. Feel free to discuss any new ideas you may have on advertising matters with the marketing department. We are always happy to consider new ways of promoting things to students.

8. Remember to use all of the media available to you - not everyone sits on Facebook constantly, so mix it up to reach the maximum audience.

9. Watch your costs! Remember that there are loads of no-cost media available in the Union, like plasma screens, so that you don't bust your budget.

10. Get your posters signed by the President or the Editor of the Courier if they are going in the Union Building.

Don't...

1. Begin postering or flyering without first seeking authorisation from the marketing department.

2. Put posters up anywhere other than on the designated poster boards in the Union or the University

3. Put posters up over the top of other people’s posters. Any posters covering others will be taken down.

4. Pay outrageous fees for things such as printing and room hire without looking at the Union alternatives first!

5. Advertise events in other venues in the Union building. Your publicity will be taken down.

6. Leave all of your advertising until the last minute and expect everything to be successful.

7. Isolate people through your advertising. Think about the student population and how you can make your club, society or event appeal to people.

8. Base your advertising for an event solely on cheap drinks offers. It's just not cool anymore and it can turn off as many people as it attracts.

9. Forget to book your table outside the Union at Reception with more than 24 hours notice!

10. Assume that, because a company or business is paying you to promote them on campus, you can simply go ahead and advertise them without first clearing it with the marketing department.
