Athletic Union

Welcome the Newcastle Athletic Union (AU) - the following web pages are designed to give you all the information you will need about sport at Newcastle.

Our Athletic Union currently boasts one of the most diverse ranges of sporting options in the Country, providing superior facilities on a broad range of levels; from outstanding athletes who compete at an international standard, to those who simply wish to get fit and have fun. In recent years, a dramatic improvement has been seen, not only in national recognition (we are currently 10th in the BUCS rankings), but also in terms of the opportunities available to all of our students.

Moreover, the Athletic Union is continually expanding with the number of clubs and members increasing year on year. At present, students can choose to compete for over 58 different sports clubs, from traditional sports such as Rugby, Football, Hockey and Netball, to more diverse alternatives such as Ultimate Frisbee and Skydiving. Nevertheless, regardless of discipline, all proudly represent the University under the collective term of 'Team Newcastle'.

In the run up to Christmas, the competition returns back to home territory as preparation is made for the most anticipated clash of the year, the Stan Calvert Cup, against local rivals Northumbria University. On just one day, 40 teams from 17 different sports will be competing in an attempt to secure what is deemed the biggest and most contested victory in the sporting calendar. The event sees over 1000 athletes battling at venues all over the city, culminating in the final rugby match at Gateshead International Stadium where the atmosphere is electric.

Newcastle are the current holders of the Stan Calvert Cup

The Athletic Union's biggest strength is without a doubt the fact that it is student led. This allows students the opportunity to not only get involved in, but feel ownership over the mechanisms and driving forces that push the Athletic Union onwards and upwards. I am sure that with the continued positive working relationship with, and backing of the Sports Centre, Team Newcastle will continue to raise our standards even higher over the coming year.

How do I get involved with the AU?

There are many ways to get involved in sport at Newcastle. On the Mon 22 & Tues 23 September (during Freshers' Week), every sports club in the AU will be available at the Freshers' Fair, held in the Sports Centre (next to Richardson Road accommodation). Here you will be able to meet club representatives / get details of signing up for clubs / information on trials etc. This is a great opportunity to see the diversity of sport at Newcastle, and join in on the fun!
